Providing safe, reliable and affordable fresh water.

On the African island of Madagascar, 11 million people still do not have access to clean water resources. About 85 % of the population lives in remote communities without access to clean water.

Belitsaka is one of these communities where 4000 people lack access to safe water. The community relies mainly on agriculture, livestock, and fishing for their livelihoods, but 75% of households live on less than 2 euros per day. The region faces an arid climate, receiving only about 300mm of rainfall annually and enduring long dry spells lasting 6 to 8 months, exacerbated by climate change.

Together with the Elemental Water Foundation, a certified NGO to help people who need it most, we were able to realize a solar desalination project in Belitsaka. The NGO, together with local partner Trans Mad, successfully raised the funds required for the installation of the solar-powered desalination system. We have provided an in-kind contribution to enable the realization of this project.

Since the completion of the water project, Belitsaka now makes to 30,000 liters of clean water every day using only salt water and sunshine.

We are happy to share that the project has been successfully commissioned and the local operators have been trained to operate and maintain the installation by Elemental Water Makers. The water will be distributed at a rate of 6 Ariary per liter, which equals 0,0013 € per liter. That’s only 0,13 cents per liter which comes at a much lower expense than the currently unsafe transported water or bottled water. Through this project, several SDGs have been reached for a vulnerable remote community of 4000 people in a developing country, including access to clean water, improved health, resilience and the possibility for further community development.
